Jane Gavaghen
Oil Painter, Freehold NJ
About
As a representational landscape painter, my attention is often drawn to the transition of light, where the light hits and misses, contracts or expands. To me, the movement of the sun indicates the passage of time and the transient nature of beauty and life.
This motif gives viewers a scene to get lost in, one that connects with the ageless part of themselves. My goal in all my work is to impart a sense of tranquility and security and, like a fleeting childhood memory, to trigger a sense of intuitive belonging and nostalgia.
I usually work in my studio from plein air studies. Outdoors I’m always scouting out drama in simple places. Indoors, I get lost in the Zen of color mixing and the math of composition. Glazes and scumbling allow the viewer to look into, as well as upon, the composition. My paintings often have six or eight layers and can take months to complete.
